Red Door Shelter: Councillors voted unanimously Wednesday to assist the Red Door Shelter on Queen St. E., which is threatened by a real estate sale, though what form that assistance may take has yet to be worked out, according to The Star. The facility has strong community support , with a 50,000-name petition submitted to council. There are signs posted in store windows and community fundraising going on, said Councillor Paula Fletcher and Toronto city council wants to keep the red door a beacon for families in need for 32 years open. The 106-bed family shelter in south Riverdale represents 13 per cent of the citys 814 permanent beds for families. The city pays Red Door $2.56 million a year for helping some 500 families.
