Niagara Falls and Federation of Canadian Municipalities FCM

Federation of Canadian Municipalities FCM: City leaders from across the country want us to believe they are cash-strapped and need more money to fix potholes, repair bridges and pay for social housing. When they gathered in Niagara Falls for the annual Federation of Canadian Municipalities FCM conference, they devoted a great deal of attention to their revenue problem, according to The Chronicle Herald. It makes sense that spending would increase with population growth to provide the same services to more citizens. It also makes sense to adjust spending for inflation to keep up with rising prices. But over the past decade, major cities from coast to coast have increased their inflation-adjusted spending two to six times as much as population growth. And Halifax is among the worst offenders and Municipalities across Canada need to address their excessive spending and Halifax is no exception. But a new report from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business shows that the real problem with cities has very little to do with a lack of revenue, and a lot to do with a lack of spending restraint.
