health services: We chose to enter the medical profession because we want to serve our communities and take care of peoples health. We want to provide health for all, but the policy creates barriers regarding whom we can care for and how we can do so. During the course of our careers, health-care trainees and professionals make vows, both explicit and unspoken, to treat every patient with compassion and respect. Refusing care to patients in need tarnishes the integrity of our professions and directly contradicts the values we are professionally obliged to uphold, according to The Star. Prior to 2012, services provided were similar to those provided to Canadians on social assistance programs. Canada prides itself on being a multicultural country welcoming of newcomers, who in return make valuable contributions to the social, economic and cultural fabric of Canada. Indeed, many of our fellow medical students are from immigrant and refugee families who came to Canada in search of a safer and better life.
