Fig Tree

fig tree: Well, not exactly. A few weeks ago I grabbed a spade in order to unearth a big fig tree that I d half-buried in the garden last November, according to The Star. Had I provided enough covering? Was it shivering, beneath the great mountains of snow? Did it hate me for shoving its branches and roots so unceremoniously into that quickly dug coffin and I ve been digging for figs. My specimen a potted one had spent the winter tipped sideways into a shallow trench, which I then hastily festooned with some soil, straw and an old Ikea coconut-fibre mat. And because the job was done in a hurry on an icy, finger-numbing day, with the temperature plummeting I kept peering anxiously out of the window all winter, wondering how my poor tree was faring.
