Mahan Nekoui and Marc Garneau

Marc Garneau: The Reckoner has become the paper to anticipate in the school community each month, and garnered two of the top honours at the 18th Toronto Star High School Newspaper Awards Thursday, in the best electronic newspaper and best newspaper volunteer categories, according to The Star. Founded in 2011 as an indie and underground news website for Marc Garneau students, The Reckoners co-founder Mahan Nekoui said the name came from the Radiohead song about serving and telling the truth, as what journalism should be and Marc Garneau Collegiate Institutes student paper has done something few news publications would do these days move from online to print. And in the process, it built a wider readership. This year, 750 entries were submitted by 20 schools from across Southern Ontario, competing in 21 award categories from feature writing to reporting, illustration and design, as well as an award for outstanding journalistic potential and strength of character, given in the name of late Star senior manager Brad Henderson.
