Nicholas Keung: That was two years ago. Now, as s Nicholas Keung reports, since that time admission rates at Torontos Hospital for Sick Children for the children of some refugees or failed claimants have doubled. The finding, taken from a recent study , suggests that parents who cannot access government health care are delaying a doctors visit until their child is very ill. This is both tragic and fundamentally unnecessary, according to The Star. Its a national embarrassment. The federal government claimed that the cuts were intended to block bogus refugees from benefiting from Canadas largesse, saving $100 million over five years. But in reality, the government has killed a humane federal program and downloaded much of its costs onto the provinces and The warnings were loud and clear. Ottawas cuts to health care benefits for asylum seekers would needlessly endanger lives and cost a whole lot more in the long run. Published in the Public Library of Science Journal, the study looked at two six-month periods, immediately before and after June of 2012 when the cuts began. Researchers found that among migrant children, Sick Kids hospital admissions jumped from 6.4 per cent to 12 per cent. As the reports co-author, Dr. Alexander Caudarella, notes, If they dont have health insurance, they present themselves later to the doctors. By then, the kids are sicker.
