Cynthia Burke: I just didnt like to see others suffer, recalls the veteran nurse, now 62, from her suburban home in Toronto. And there was this lady, Mrs. Edwards, in my village, who used to be a nurse. I think it was the white uniform, more than anything else, that I wanted to become a nurse, according to The Star. Burke was a fixture at the Regent Park Community Health Centre clinic until late February, when she was diagnosed with intestinal cancer and had to take a leave of absence and Cynthia Burke sensed her calling while nursing birds with broken wings and other injured animals on her parents farm in Jamaica. After spending 40 years in nursing, a career that has taken her from Jamaica to England and then Canada, Burke is one of three nurses receiving honourable mention for the Toronto Stars 2014 Nightingale Award for nurse of the year. She is being recognized for her distinguished career serving the Regent Park community for almost a quarter of a century.
