Laura Konkel: In Grade 1 at the time, she remembers it was cold and she got the sniffles. But nothing stopped the determined little girl who was committed to the cause after her mother had explained that United Way helped people who werent as lucky as they were. Konkel understood she couldnt give up when others needed her, according to The Star. That experience left an indelible mark on the little girl and was the beginning of a lifelong labour of love as a volunteer. On Wednesday, Konkel, 23, will be among 40 Ontarians to receive the Governor Generals Caring Canadian Award for reaching out to others and When she started volunteering, Laura Konkel had to stand on her tippy toes to ring door bells as she sold raffle tickets in support of United Way. The pint-sized volunteer must have made an impression at the door because neighbours dug deep buying up every last ticket she had.
