Mohamed Fahmy: As journalists worldwide increasingly raise their voices against the brutal crackdown on the news media by Egypts military-led government, we are learning some answers to these questions, according to The Star. To one prominent American journalist, and to many of his colleagues and friends, Fahmy is special. In a personal email this week to an Al Jazeera friend, this Washington journalist wrote: Mohamed Fahmy saved my life in Egypt, literally. . . . He was at the mob attack against us in front of the Israeli Embassy back in September, 2011. Mohamed helped me to extricate myself, and two young women. . . . I had to jump behind the wheel of our vehicle . . . and with Mohamed hanging on to the open door shouting instructions at me on what to do, where to drive, etc. we got out of there and Who is Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy, and why has he been kept in solitary confinement for more than seven weeks in a dark, dirty cell in Egypts notorious Scorpion prison built for convicted terrorists ? And why hasnt Canadas government at the highest level been far more outspoken in his defence? Fahmy, a graduate in marketing from City University in Vancouver, holds dual Egyptian-Canadian citizenship and has parents who have lived in Montreal for 20 years. In Cairo, where he has worked for CNN and the New York Times, he is now bureau chief for the Al Jazeera English network. I was managing director of that network in Qatar between 2008 and 2010.
