Richard Shields: The question, posed in recent articles and letters on this page by Michelle Zimic and Richard Shields and other writers, is whether it is time for one public school system in Ontario. , according to Hamilton Spectator. To begin with, he and other letter writers who support Roman Catholic schools assume that because religion is part of life and history as it surely is , it must therefore be the critical basis of an education. Religion, he claims, "provides an ethical framework for citizenship" and expands the "horizons of young people." In other words, yes, we are all for apples and oranges but please dont put them in the same basket It's a nagging issue, to be sure. The answer, however, is yes and increasingly yes again. Old ways are hard to change but, really, it is simply common sense given our diverse, Canadian culture, rich in ethnic and religious variance not even mentioning the question of fiscal realities. It's happening in other provinces, it's slowly penetrating the political arena in Ontario and eventually it will become actuality. Meanwhile, Shields's defence of separate schools is interesting not only for what it says but for what it omits.
