Paul Bennetts

Paul Bennetts: Although I believe homeschooling is a basic right that should be available to all families that choose to implement it, I found Paul Bennetts statement May 15 opinion piece that Children who are highly gifted, severely challenged, or being raised in devout Christian homes often do not easily fit into the standard model ... a little cavalier and off-putting, according to The Chronicle Herald. One number that I would like to see publicly disseminated is how many children with special needs are being homeschooled because their parents felt they had no other choice. How many families are struggling financially because one of the parents was forced to end their employment in order to provide their child with an education? Or just to keep them safe from further harm and Should be a choice Homeschooling should be a choice, and it most often isnt for homeschooled children with special needs. These parents are being forced into homeschooling, perhaps because they can no longer bear to watch their child come home in a severely agitated state every day; can no longer bear to see what effect the public school system is having on their childs self-esteem and personality; are scared to death that their child might attempt to make good on their threats to harm themselves; or perhaps because the school has literally pushed their child out.
