City council: City council has been flirting with the possibility for years. It is time for a definitive yes, according to The Star. As things now stand, some 250,000 newcomers who contribute to Toronto as taxpayers, workers, volunteers, parents and civic activists are barred from the ballot box. Many of them live in neighbourhoods that need a strong voice on city council. But candidates have little interest in canvassing communities where people cant vote and Toronto has a chance to become the first city in Canada that extends the right to vote in municipal elections to all permanent residents, citizens and non-citizens. Municipal bureaucrats have prepared a report on the pros and cons of extending the right to vote to immigrants with permanent resident status. It will be considered by council early next month.
