Nova Bhattacharya: Toronto Dance Scene

Phil Strong Dept: Dance can reflect the profundity of shared admiration, understanding and respect as evidenced by Akshongay , a new work co-choreographed and performed this week by two bright lights on the Toronto dance scene, Nova Bhattacharya and Louis Laberge-Ct , according to The Star. It no accident the 50-minute work, with an original score by composer/sound designer Phil Strong, takes its title from the Bengali word for together. But the unusual thing about Bhattacharya and Laberge-Ct artistically founded friendship is that they come from such different dance backgrounds and Intimacy can assume many shapes and dance as an art form has proved singularly adept at representing them, and not necessarily always in a boy-meets-girl, pas de deux kind of way. Theirs is an intimacy born of mutual artistic curiosity. Though in no way romantic each is married to others the intimacy they share through dance has forged a powerful bond.
