Employers Dept: Whoa, talk about provocative, over-the-top rhetoric. If the AFL has evidence of criminal wrongdoing, they should go straight to the RCMP. But casting aspersions on all employers who legitimately utilize the program for specific jobs is unfair, and quite frankly, offensive to Alberta hard-working business owners and entrepreneurs, according to Calgary Herald. The AFL is right about one thing: if the government has been approving applications under the accelerated stream that are not in accordance with the current criteria, they need to answer for that. But right from the outset, perhaps a better approach would have been to allow employers with a solid track record of compliance with employment, labour and immigration standards and rules to access the expedited process to find qualified employees at all skills levels in those instances where Canadian workers are clearly not available and Never shy about stirring the pot, the Alberta Federation of Labour is at it again. The group put out a news release this week with wild accusations of widespread abuse of the accelerated stream within the temporary foreign worker program. They even went so far as to say there has been evidence of fraud. Specifically, the AFL asserts that although the accelerated temporary foreign worker process was originally intended for employers to fill high-skilled jobs, the majority of the 2,400 applications to date have been granted to fast food restaurants, convenience stores, and other service industry businesses for low-skilled workers. As the AFL admits, however, it is difficult to know how exactly many of these are manager-level jobs which would, in fact, qualify for the accelerated stream. (www.immigrantscanada.com).
