There he met a young Canadian dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and fell in love. He married, had a son and eventually was able to immigrate to Montreal to join his wife and child in 1989. They had two more children, and in 1999 he and his family moved to Toronto and More than 240,000 immigrants are expected to arrive in Canada this year. Many will settle in the GTA. For some, their dreams may take years to build. For others, those dreams may never materialize. Njacko Backo came to Canada in 1989, having left his native Cameroon in 1975, at the age of 17. He travelled to Nigeria via canoe and across much of west Africa for years, looking for a place to call home. His dream was to get to Europe a dream shared by many on his continent.
