Monique Smith Dept: Over almost a quarter century in Ontario politics, the long-time New Democratic MPP found dead in his Welland home Saturday at just 60 was renowned for his high-profile antics and keen nose for publicity. Yet he lived as a loner, maybe even a lonely soul, according to The Star. Kormos preferred to seem irascible, but was thoughtful and sweet. When former Liberal cabinet minister Monique Smith, his old adversary as house leader, recently returned to Queen Park with the new government of Premier Kathleen Wynne, Kormos sent her flowers and Peter Kormos was, as well as being a natural-born contrarian practically made for a life of political opposition, a complicated man. He was mischievous and funny, with gusts up to hilarious. But, as with many a person with the gift of humour, he had a deep strain of melancholy.
