Durward Dept: The 59-year-old Calgarian made the significant career shift from businessman to auteur a short 18 months ago and has already finished two films, according to Calgary Herald. All of which would provide enough potential problems without adding to them. But Durward, a non-Muslim, also decided he wanted to make a film about Muslims. And not just any film, but a difficult, Calgary-based drama that touches on cultural differences, religious oppression, racism and even terrorism, albeit briefly and Director Jim Durward is not one to take the easy route. The Beekeeper, his second, will screen on Friday and Saturday at the Plaza Theatre. It is a decidedly low-budget enterprise. In fact, while not wanting to reveal exactly how low, Durward refers to it as super, super micro-budget. He wrote, financed, produced and directed it. He was a one-man crew during the shoot. Post-production was also a solo endeavour.
