Evgueni Mataev Dept: That is what the young woman at the heart of a human trafficking trial said was on her mind the day she finally broke free of the men who allegedly controlled her life for months while she was used as a sex slave and forced into prostitution, according to Montreal Gazette. She said the opportunity came shortly after Evgueni Mataev, 39, the man she alleged used her as a sex slave for months, was arrested by Montreal police for an attempted murder. She testified she was brought to a two-storey house on Birnam St., in Park Extension, and that Vasilios Mastoropoulos, 35, a man she knew only as Billy, was assigned to watch over her for Mataev. She said Mastoropoulos claimed he was in love with her and that he didn t want her working as a prostitute anymore. Instead, she alleged, Mastoropoulos instructed her on how to shoplift products, like shampoo and conditioner, which he would sell to local barber shops and mONTREAL Anywhere is better than hell. During what was her third day of testimony in the trial of five men at the Montreal courthouse, the woman, an American who was living in Canada illegally, told the nine men and three women on the jury about how she finally escaped.
