Fisheries from Bounty to Plunder, by Norman Safarik with Allan Safarik Browsing for Christmas gifts that are a little out of the mainstream? Learn more about our province's history and society, or just revel in the beauty of our flora and fauna, in these publications. Here are some books, reviewed by The Sun's STEPHEN HUME, about this amazing province that aren't likely to show up on one of those generic bestseller lists or get reviewed in national newspapers, but are nevertheless worth a look: Visitors to the spectacular beaches of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve will know Radar Hill Trail. It leads to the remnant of a Second World War electronic surveillance station, a reminder of defences hurriedly put in place in the panic following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. One important post, complete with big gun emplacements, radar and a 500-soldier garrison, was built to command the narrow choke point in Johnstone Strait which separates the north end of Vancouver Island from the mainland. Based on interviews with people who were there, archival documents and a collection of rare photographs and sketches, Gilbert's book brings to life the largely forgotten war on the Coast.
