Iceland: Provincial Heritage Site

Gimli Dept: He was born in Iceland in 1863 and came to Canada as an adult to work in the tinsmithing trade in 1886. He moved to Gimli 12 years later and opened a general store, which became one of the best-stocked shops in the province by the 1920s, selling groceries, hardware and general merchandise. He was a town councillor and later served as Gimli s mayor from 1911 to 1913, and again from 1919 to 1923. The store, which has been designated a provincial heritage site, is still there more than 100 years later and is managed by the same family. He died in 1954, according to Winnipeg Free Press.
