Harbourfront Centre Dept: Quijada s latest work, Gravity of Center , which his RUBBERBANDance Group performs this weekend at Harbourfront Centre, is a semi-abstracted portrait of what can happen in a society that s lost everything, according to The Star. We see ourselves as civilized and rational, says the 36-year-old choreographer/dancer, but are we really and an artist s imagination can be ignited by almost anything, although an economic meltdown might seem among the less likely agents. Yet it was the ricocheting financial crisis triggered by the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008 that set acclaimed Montreal choreographer Victor Quijada on the path toward Gravity of Center . As Quijada explains, it was the way the Great Recession stripped people of their comfortable assurance in material abundance that got him thinking about how societies respond to such truly extreme adversities as war and famine.
