Isla Mujeres Dept: The chief of detectives in the state of Quintana Roo keen-TAH-nah roh says several Cubans jumped into the sea and tried to swim to shore when the boat was stopped by Mexican sailors off the island of Isla Mujeres, according to Montreal Gazette. It is unclear how many people escaped to the island, where immigrant smugglers have been active in the past. Chief detective Arturo Olivares says about 20 Cubans are believed to been aboard the craft. Ten were detained Friday, and the bodies of a man and a woman were found in the water.
