Esprit Orchestra Dept: Like the best pennies, both came pretty much out of the blue without any planning or thinking on my part to get in their way, according to The Star. In some ways, the two performances could hardly have been more different. Lua Shayenne & Co. is a small group of gifted, fearlessly energetic young dancers. They were supported by an astonishingly good three-piece African percussion section and the penny dropped for me at a performance of Lua Shayenne s dance company Sunday afternoon at the Lower Ossington Theatre. And then it dropped for me again, later that same evening, at the Esprit Orchestra s 30th Anniversary concert at Koerner Hall. One show followed the other by almost exactly the time it takes to be almost late getting from lower Ossington to the Royal Conservatory. But that was only an accident of scheduling. It s not as if I had gone to either event intending to think about what it means to be a citizen of Toronto.
