Sani Dept: With the voyage complete and the crew scattered, Sani had the boat and his thoughts to himself. It sank in: he had sailed around the world, according to The Chronicle Herald. Roberto Sani was raised in a comfortable Roman home near the Appian Way, famed highway of the Caesars. His mother was from Bathurst, N.B. She was the Canadian connection that ultimately brought the teenaged Sani to Halifax and in the end, it was Roberto Sani all alone in the twilit peace of a nearly-empty boat, moored in a safe English harbour. He had shared that boat with a dozen or more crew mates for a year less 10 days. They had sailed, worked, bonded, bickered and discovered together, crammed into 68 feet of fiberglas. It was your circle, your universe, your safe haven for a year, as Sani describes it. But it was always crowded. But that s the end of our story about a voyage of 40,000 nautical miles, 13 countries and six continents. It s also about a youth in traditional Italy, immigration to Canada at 17, achieving success in business and a love affair with boats. Like so many yachties, Sani wanted to sail past the headlands and into waters deep and mysterious. Unlike so many, he would actually do it.
