Immigrant Parents Dept: I was raised by working-class immigrant parents who had very little formal education. Money was scarce but there was no shortage of books, according to Vancouver Sun. Books are the main reason I have idyllic memories of summer. There was no pressure to read, I just remember spending long hours in the shade of a tree, lost in a book. There was still time left in the day to help my mom make strawberry jam and play outside until it got dark. On Sunday nights at 8 o'clock we'd gather in front of the black and white TV to watch The Ed Sullivan Show and i can't imagine my life without the printed word. My parents both read and my sisters and I followed their lead.
