Conrad Black

Thomas Mulcair Dept: In fact, a grovelling Mr. Black wouldn't be very appealing and definitely not the same man whom Canadians have learned to both love and hate over the decades, according to Winnipeg Free Press. As for remorse, he is quick to remind his inquisitors he was convicted of just three of the original 17 charges related to corporate theft and fraud. Another charge was overturned on appeal, leaving just one conviction for fraud involving under $300,000 and one for obstruction of justice. He is seeking ways to appeal both because he says he is innocent, and some informed observers agree he was the victim of an overzealous and bloodthirsty prosecutorial instinct in the United States and unlike the prodigal son who begged for forgiveness and mercy, Conrad Black has returned home defiant and unrepentant. He is welcome just the same. The NDP's Thomas Mulcair and a handful of fellow travellers claim "the British criminal" received special treatment from immigration authorities, who granted Mr. Black a temporary resident permit, but there is no evidence his case benefited from political influence or undue consideration.
