The Canadian Cancer Society Show: Cancer

Lung Cancer Dept: The latest stats from the Canadian Cancer Society show 75,700 Canadians are expected to die from cancer in 2012, but more people are beating the disease. The cancer mortality rate has been declining since 1988, with an estimated 100,000 lives saved from 1988 to 2007, according to The Star. While lung cancer diagnoses and deaths have been declining for men since the 1980s, the rates for women are only now stabilizing after years of increase and more Canadians are being diagnosed with liver, thyroid and kidney cancers and the increase may be linked with factors like obesity and alcohol abuse. New cancer cases are increasing in tandem with an aging and growing population, and the biggest threat remains lung cancer, which causes more deaths than breast, prostate and colorectal cancers combined.
