ASCD Dept: Principal David Rawnsley along with three teachers and a former principal will be flying to Philadelphia, Pa., where they will receive the award March 25 at the ASCD's 67th annual conference being held in that city, according to Vancouver Sun. The award is given annually to a school that has moved beyond the narrow focus of academic achievement and engages the "whole child, creating learners who are knowledgeable, emotionally and physically healthy, civically active, artistically engaged, prepared for economic self-sufficiency and ready for the world beyond for-mal schooling." Burnaby's Byrne Creek secondary school has been named winner of the 2012 Vision in Action: The ASCD Whole Child Award - the first Canadian school to receive the prestigious award from the inter-national education leadership association. "This is amazing recognition for the school. We're so excited that we're having to catch our breath. From a practical perspective we're very proud that our work has been recognized," Rawnsley said Thursday.
