Bonanno Crime Family Dept: The 40-year-old reputed Mafioso, who was found dead Thursday on a small island near Repentigny, was deported by the United States in 2009. As a dual citizen of Canada, where he was born, and Italy, where he was raised in Sicily, he chose to return to the city he was born in. Police sources have speculated for months that Montagna, who was married and the father of three daughters, chose to return to Montreal with the goal of filling a void in the Mafia created by a series of arrests that were followed by kidnappings and murders, according to Montreal Gazette. A police source told The Gazette Thursday Montagna was suspected of shaking down several Montreal-area construction companies for five per cent of their profits, something he allegedly did in New York during a short stint as the head of the Bonanno crime family before his deportation to Canada and salvatore Montagna did not return to his birthplace quietly. After keeping a relatively low profile for a while - some local organized crime investigators had no idea who Montagna was in 2009 - he appeared to become more active in 2011.
