Statistics Canada Dept: The new study reveals the employment rate of people aged 55 and older was 34 per cent in 2010, compared with 22 per cent in 1996. The 2010 number is even higher than the 30.2 per cent of 1976 - before the push for retiring at 55 became popular, according to Montreal Gazette. Susan Brice, director of the Victoria Silver Threads Society, was not surprised by the findings, saying her group has long been aware of the desire to keep working later in life and more older Canadians are continuing to work, reversing an earlier trend toward early retirement, says a new study from Statistics Canada released Wednesday. StatsCan also projects a 50-year-old Canadian working in 2008 could expect to work an additional 16 years. In the mid-'90s, a 50-year-old could expect to work another 12.5 years.
