Poverty Rates: Crime Rates

Community Foundation Dept: Economic growth here has lagged behind the national average, but the amount of money we have to spend has grown faster, according to The Chronicle Herald. Those contrasts are found in a new report from the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia that will be released today. It is meant to paint a picture of the province by using statistics on matters ranging from population to people s sense of belonging, health to crime rates and education to the economy. Many compare Nova Scotia with the national rate and nova Scotians say they have better access to doctors than other people in the country, but our health is generally worse. Poverty rates overall, and for children, declined in the last decade and run about 24 per cent above the national average, but for the elderly, the rate is up and stands 107 per cent above the national figure.
