Sun Yat Sen: Chinese Immigrants

Qing Dynasty Dept: Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the revolutionary leader considered the "father of the Chinese nation," visited Vancouver three times - in 1897, 1910 and 1911 - seeking political and financial support for armed revolt against the autocratic Qing dynasty, according to Vancouver Sun. The City of Vancouver commemorated the revolution on Friday with a ceremony outside city hall. Mayor Gregor Robertson read a proclamation and the flag of the Chinese Freemasons - the group that gave Sun refuge in Vancouver - was raised. The dissident physician is credited with financing and spearheading the revolution after several previous uprisings failed and the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Revolution is being celebrated this week in Vancouver - a city with a historical connection to the nationalist uprising in 1911 that led to the founding of modern China. Sun's insurrectionary message was well-received by the first waves of Chinese immigrants to Vancouver, who mostly came from Guangdong province in southeastern China, which was also the political leader's home region.
