Drug Addict Dept: The Mirandas have asked Immigration Minister Jason Kenney's office to issue their 13-year-old grandson a temporary resident permit to come and stay with them in Canada until he can become independent or until his drug-addict mother is rehabilitated. The Canadian visa post in Manila suggested adoption, unaffordable for the Mirandas . The reply from Kenney's office: We recognize that proceeding with an inter-country adoption will take time but it is necessary, said immigration spokesperson Nancy Caron. A temporary resident permit is not appropriate when there is no intention to return the child to the country of birth, according to The Star. Let's not just talk about family values, but practise them. Welcome the boy to a compassionate Canada! Re: T.O. woman must pick grandson or husband, Sept. 25 What a cold, unfeeling reply! At an age when the supervision of a loving family is particularly important, bureaucracy says rules are rules a couple of years are unimportant. This boy poses no risk to Canada. Surely, in our family-minded government, Kenney or Stephen Harper can cut the red tape and admit this boy immediately. It is hardly likely to set off an avalanche of 13-year-old boys worldwide, all anxious to come and live with grandparents.
