Refugee Status Dept: Figures obtained by Postmedia News show Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board has experienced a spike in claims in the first six months of this year as NATO-backed rebel forces continue battling the violent regime of Moammar Gadhafi, according to Calgary Herald. A spokeswoman for Citizenship and Immigration said the numbers are not out of the ordinary and a pair of Libyan diplomats facing expulsion from Canada aren't the only people from the turbulent North African nation to claim refugee status in recent months. Between January and June, the IRB received 135 claims for refugee status from Libyan nationals compared to 41 in all of 2010.
