Extradition Request: Extradition Treaty

Political Motivation Dept: Canada's first commitment should be the aggressive but principled pursuit of an extradition treaty with China. In its existing extradition treaties, China has waived capital punishment, according to Vancouver Sun. The benefits to Canada of this treaty are reduction of bilateral tension and the formation of diplomacy based primarily on the rule of law and prime Minister Stephen Harper's majority government presents Canada with an ideal opportunity to commit to a more robust engagement with China. The core principle should be strengthening the bilateral relationship through the rule of law. Canada should insist that a treaty include a transparent mechanism for review and verification of all cases. The Chinese government would have to accept the opinion of Canada's judicial process in such matters. It should stipulate that approval to extradite will be granted only in accordance with the merits of each individual case. There should be an objective review by the Canadian Embassy to determine that there is no hidden political motivation in an extradition request. As reported in the news.
