The minister in charge, Jason Kenney, promised to consult Canadians on a wide range of issues: how many newcomers to let in; how to choose among workers seeking a better life, refugees seeking asylum and families seeking to bring in parents and grandparents; and how to speed up the tortuous admission process. But Kenney is pre-empting real public debate by pushing hot buttons and waving red flags. In Toronto last week he announced that Ottawa is poised to strip 1,800 people of their citizenship. There are some around the world who would seek to abuse Canada s openness and who would seek to devalue Canadian citizenship. I m here to tell those people that Canadian citizenship is not for sale.
