Refugee Agency: Immigration Minister

Don Davies Dept: Adel Benhmuda, now 43, his wife and their four children including two born in Canada were deported in 2008, after Canada rejected Benhmuda s claim for refugee status. He says he was detained on arrival in Tripoli and jailed for a total of six months on two separate occasions, according to The Star. Their ordeal was revealed in Saturday s Star and raised in the House of Commons yesterday by the NDP s Don Davies, who asked Kenney when he would bring these Canadian children, and their family, back to Canada where they belong and immigration Minister Jason Kenney says he will quickly deal with a request to return to Canada from a man who says he was tortured when this country deported him and his family to Libya. During that time, he says, prison guards regularly bound his bare feet, strung him up in the air and beat the soles with batons and electrical wires. The family then fled to the island of Malta and was granted refugee status. The UN s refugee agency, the UNHCR, has asked Canada to resettle them as refugees. As reported in the news.
