International Film Festival: Sarah Polley

Pride Of London Dept: The Canadian movie industry often amounts to discovering what Ryan Gosling is up to these days, or if Sarah Polley has anything coming. Funny you should ask: Gosling is in three films in the second half of 2011, including a wacky comedy with Steve Carell, an existential action film in which he plays an indomitable getaway driver, and a political drama with George Clooney. The pride of London, Ont., may be breaking out of that ghetto of the "critically acclaimed" the critically acclaimed Half Nelson, the critically acclaimed Blue Valentine, etc. , and into things more populist. Not Notebook populist, maybe, but big enough, according to Vancouver Sun. Canadian cinema is coming off a great year that included Barney's Version and Incendies, two films set in different strata of the Montreal mosaic - Jewish/ literary and Arab/immigrant - that showcased its broadly based art. We were reminded again that, even in a year without a movie by Polley, say, or David Cronenberg, we can be smart, funny, haunting and worldly and like most people caught up in the patriotic fever of July 1, you're probably asking, "What high-profile delights can I look forward to in the Canadian movie industry this year?" Well, that, and, "Did anyone see where I left my beer?" As for Polley, her new movie - the one where Sarah Silverman has a nude scene - doesn't open until next spring, but it's expected to be a hot ticket at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. It's called Take This Waltz, just like the Leonard Cohen song, and if that doesn't get you excited, you must have skipped over the part about the Sarah Silverman nude scene. As reported in the news.
