Canada Border: Throne Speech

Reisman Dept: Since NAFTA came into effect, Canada's trade with the U.S. has increased by more than 80 per cent. In 2009, it amounted to $592 billion, or more than $1.6 billion a day, according to Vancouver Sun. But NAFTA did not envisage the events of 9/11 and their consequences for the movement of goods and people across the U.S.-Canada border. The Americans' justifiable security concerns are throwing sand in the gears of trade and commerce and of the 3,654 words of the throne speech -excluding opening salutations -just 63 were devoted to the most important bilateral negotiation with the United States since Simon Reisman and Peter Murphy began in 1986 to work out the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement. The FTA was passed in 1988 and superseded by the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1994. So closer cooperation between Canada and the U.S. is in the interest of both countries. As reported in the news.
