Refugees In Australia: East Timor Government

Ethnic Element Dept: The World Bank has warned Malaysia it has a serious and mounting brain drain problem. Bank senior economist Philip Schellekens said last week the number of Malaysians with tertiary education living and working abroad has tripled in the last two decades. Two out of every 10 Malaysians with a college or university qualification have opted to leave for greener pastures. Schellekens said there is an ethnic element to the flight with about 88 per cent of those leaving being ethnic Chinese. The top three reasons for qualified people emigrating are career prospects, pay and social justice, according to Vancouver Sun. Australia thought it had an elegant solution to its problem of illegal immigrant boat people, mostly from Afghanistan and South Asia. Rather than try to deal with all the problems of the constitutional rights afforded -or not -would-be refugees in Australia or associated territories, the government of Prime Minister Julia Gillard came up with the idea of building a refugee processing centre in the nearby state of East Timor. Talks with the East Timor government appeared to be going well until last week when President Jose Ramos-Horta announced his government "will not agree to set up an asylum-seeker processing centre in the country."
