Abdulla Dept: "Every time Finland's economy is doing badly, people look for a scapegoat, and immigrants are a group of people who aren't able to defend themselves so well," Somali-born Finn Zahra Abdulla said while campaigning in Helsinki two days before Sunday's general elections, according to Montreal Gazette. In the 2007 elections, Abdulla was declared the first refugee, the first non-European, and the first black person to win a seat in the Finnish parliament - until a final tally showed she had lost the seat by the slimmest of margins and the sudden rise of the nationalist True Finns has overshadowed a smaller but significant rise in the number of candidates of immigrant origin vying for a place in Finland's parliament, observers said Friday. Clad head-to-toe in a bright green hijab, the colours of the Green League party, Abdulla passed out flyers and samples of a spiced tea she created, and invited people to eat the savoury pastries she had baked.
