Maclean Dept: A smaller than normal herd in western Canada a ripple effect from the 2003 mad cow crisis has resulted in the plants operating at only 30 per cent capacity, the company said, according to CBC. "Lots of it was due to the BSE and, you know, because people weren't making enough money, they tend to cut their herds back," said Chuck MacLean, chairman of the Alberta Beef Producers and about 500 employees will be laid off next month as XL Foods closes two beef processing plants in Calgary. "The chains have been running slower at these plants and normally that's caused by lack of inventory," said Chuck MacLean, chairman of the Alberta Beef Producers. As reported in the news.
