Early Pioneers: Immigration

Freedom Of The City Dept: For its 50th birthday in 1936, the city began to grant the Freedom of the City to worthy citizens who had "gained national and international acclaim in the arts, business or philanthropy, and who has brought recognition to Vancouver ....", according to Vancouver Sun. Looking through the list today there are names we would all recognize, but many, too, that have faded from popular memory. Still, it was a good place to begin to assemble my own list and in the past, our city has celebrated and bestowed honours upon the first white baby born in the city -that's Miss Margaret F. McNeil -made a big deal out of the early pioneers and highlighted the entrepreneurs responsible for the city's rapid development. More than 80 Freemen have been created since the Lord Mayor of London became the first Freeman, in honour of the city that inspired Vancouver's award. As reported in the news.
