Land Dispute Dept: Nominees for the annual $35,000 literary award, presented to the best Canadian book of public policy, were announced Tuesday, according to CBC. In 1990, the land dispute between residents of Oka, Que., and the Mohawk community of Kanesatake led to a 78-day standoff between Mohawks and Quebec police and Canadian troops and a book about the Oka crisis, written by a former deputy minister of Indian and Northern Affairs, is among five non-fiction titles in the running for the Donner Prize. Harry Swain, who was deputy minister of Indian and Northern Affairs from 1987 to 1992, looks at mistakes and lessons learned from Oka in Oka: A Political Crisis and Its Legacy. As reported in the news.
