Conservative Budget: Immigration

Public Infrastructure Dept: With the recession-time stimulus dollars set to dry up completely this fall, the Harper government pledged to enshrine in law the annual sharing of $2 billion in federal gas taxes, according to Calgary Herald. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty also won plaudits from a civic lobby association with the budget speech's single line about crafting a "new longterm plan for public infrastructure." After the federal Conservative budget offered little but goodwill gestures to Canadian cities, Mayor Naheed Nenshi said he'll press the parties to craft strong urban agendas during a possible election campaign. But the Tories had already said they'd make that gas-tax program permanent in 2008. It delivers nearly $60 million a year to Calgary, according to city documents. As reported in the news.
