Settlement Workers Dept: The cuts in federal spending on immigrant settlement agencies will particularly affect Ontario. Some $43 million is supposed to be cut in funding, so some agencies will disappear entirely and others will have to reduce their services, according to The Star. At a time when the gap between rich and poor is widening in Toronto, and costs of living are going up, it seems cynical and shortsighted of the federal government to strike out at the most vulnerable part of our population. Whereas now newcomers are getting some of the help they desperately need, in the future they will be crippled and re: Settlement groups fight for funding, Jan. 28 This fall, I worked as a guidance counselor in a newcomer recepetion centre for the Toronto District School Board. I was able to personally observe hundreds of newcomers and their families getting vital information from settlement workers about finding good health care, employment opportunities, language classes, legal aid, and career choices.
