Plea Bargain: Toronto Star

Battered Wife Dept: Liliana Fontes, 25, went into an interview with the Canada Border Services Agency in Toronto Wednesday fearing a hard date for her removal from Canada. The Portuguese native was greeted instead by a half-smiling official who suggested she file for a second assessment of the danger she faced from a husband who allegedly threatened to kill her upon arrival, according to The Star. Husband Mario Fonseca, 36, was recently convicted of beating her with a beer bottle and obstructing justice by trying to coerce her to tell the judge that she was lying. Other charges, including sexual assault, and threatening death, were withdrawn as part of a plea bargain and a battered wife s deportation is on hold after a Toronto Star investigation revealed her life could be in danger if Canada sent her to Portugal. I m breathing a little better now, Fontes said after the meeting. They say they are willing to have another look at my case and a final decision will not be made for several months.
