Editorial Feb Dept: Your excellent editorial points out how changes made to immigration under the current government are tougher for new immigrant families. I would point out that Canada still takes in more immigrants and refugees, per capita, than any other country. Many countries have a far less generous family class reunification immigration system, than ours, according to The Star. We must bear in mind, however, that the driving force behind our mass immigration policy has been to solve problems of an aging population and low birthrate. Thus, adding more elderly would surely exacerbate both problems, plus place further demands on our struggling healthcare system and re: Immigrants see a harsher Canada, Editorial Feb.19 During these tough economic times, as immigration is a right not a privilege, placing more emphasis on skilled workers does make economic sense. Certainly, it is compassionate and humanitarian to bring in the parents and grandparents of newcomers, as they provide an important support system. As reported in the news.
