Immigration Minister: Mcmahon Stadium

Jason Kenney Dept: As Quebec City announced plans Thursday for a new hockey arena, Immigration Minister Jason Kenney, MP for Calgary Southeast, said a cash-strapped federal government will not subsidize pro sports franchises, according to Calgary Herald. Kenney said Quebec City, Calgary and other municipalities are welcome to use some of the billions of dollars in federal gas tax revenue on constructing new sports venues if they so wish, as Ottawa reviews loosening the restrictions on how the dollars can be spent and a Calgary federal cabinet minister says the city and other municipalities are free to use gas tax dollars on building pro sports venues, and that Ottawa has received funding requests for McMahon Stadium and the Saddledome. However, he said there have been federal funding requests for sports facilities in every major city, including in Calgary for McMahon Stadium and the Scotiabank Saddledome, as well as a new arena in Edmonton. As reported in the news.
