Post Secondary Education Dept: Since 2007, Ontario s Provincial Nominee Program has attracted and retained highly skilled immigrants who contribute to Ontario s knowledge-based economy in areas like healthcare and post-secondary education, according to The Star. A series of unilateral federal decisions have hurt the balance of immigrants coming into Ontario to the point where only 16 per cent are selected on the basis of their economic potential; in the rest of the country, that number is 25 per cent and re: Cohn: Losing the immigration game, Feb. 15 But the program is not a substitute for the federal government s role in immigrant selection, in part because the federal government alone controls PNP levels. We welcomed more than 118,000 immigrants to our province in 2010, but our PNP is capped by the federal government at 1,000, a target we will meet in 2011.
